This news just came in from the North Pole....Once again, Santa will be in the Elvehjem area on THURSDAY DEC 20th as part of his world tour! Dennis S. has generously agreed to appointment calls for Santa. Please call him at 221-3865 to schedule a time and provide him with details! Many thanks to Santa and his helpers for once again taking time to visit our neighborhood!

The Board has been dealing with a variety of issues. Please read the minutes for a summary of our discussions. We are working on the new directory and hope to have it put together in the next few months. Anyone who is a paid member will receive the directory as a benefit of that membership. It's not too late to pay the $10 yearly dues so that you, too, will get the directory.
Residents who are unhappy that neighbors do not seem to take pride in the Elvehjem area have called board members. We have complaints of cars and boats parked in yards or on the streets for months at a time (often leaking fluids), unkempt yards, or "junk" around houses to name a few. The Board does not feel that it has the authority to contact any resident directly; however, we can assist in locating the proper city authorities if a valid complaint exists. I hope we don't get to that point - please help to make Elvehjem the best it can be!
We are keeping our eye on some upcoming developments in the area. Once we learn more, we will certainly be disseminating the information through the Echo. A group of concerned eastside leaders and residents are in the process of forming the Eastside Neighborhood Coalition. This group can provide a great voice in the planning of future development and safety issues that face our community every day. Please see future Echos for more information important to "our side of town."
Happy Holidays!

C'mon...it's fun!
The County Budget has been completed. I'm told this has been one of the most cooperative budgets passed by the County Board and the County Executive in some time. The good news in the budget for our District is that the County Board and the County Executive agreed with our efforts to fund the redesign for the reconstruction of the East Buckeye and Cottage Grove bridges. This effort had successful City-County cooperation between staff and elected officials, also. Thanks to all of you who sent e-mails and signed petitions for this effort!
In addition, the County Board voted to increase the reserve account by $900,000, over the proposed increase by the County Executive of $400,000. The increase was approved by the County Executive, bringing the total increase in the reserve fund to $l,300,000 for 2002. I believe this was a wise decision, given the expected decrease in state and federal funding in 2002.
More good news for the East Side! An East Side Neighborhood Planning Council has been proposed, initiated by the Ridgewood Neighborhood Association.
A new after school supervised Teen Center is now open at the newly remodeled and expanded East Side YMCA.
As always, please call or e-mail me with your ideas, issues and concerns. I can be reached at 222-3279, mcguire@co.dane.wi.us, 502 Glenview Drive, 53716.
My family and I wish all of you a happy and healthy holiday and New Year!
If you were not visited by a block captain, please call Mary Ann at 221-2490 to sign up - so you can be included in the new directory. If you have questions on your membership status call Kathy, 222-1555. Directories should be available in the spring!

- Irish proverbThis year, the ENA Association, in conjunction with Santa Claus and North Pole Productions, Limited, will bring Santa and have him join us for a Holiday Sing Along! Kids can visit Santa and everybody can sing some holiday cheer. Bring your favorite batch of Seasons Cookies and share it with your neighbors! Santa provides the zip, but ENA provides the punch! But don't forget those yummy cookies! They were a big hit last year. Let's do it again! And, as always, there's a surprise for the kids. Jan Malecha, professional music therapist, is scheduled to play piano again for this year's fest.
What: LVM Holiday Sing AlongAs the holiday season fast approaches, so does the annual Holiday Decorating Contest! So put on your creative and decorative hats and let's deck out the neighborhood with holiday designs and sparkles! Jim S. of Bea Circle has again this year generously agreed to provide an original ceramic creation as the first place award. An honorable mention winner will also be named. Judging will begin on December 19th and be concluded by December 23rd, so if your decorations are wonderful, don't be surprised to receive a knock on the door and a wonderful holiday sculpture! If you'd like to nominate a neighbor's decorations, please call any board member before December 19th. Ready, set, decorate! back to news & events page back to home page

Market Day sprang from an idea by an Illinois mom to bring fresh produce for a school fundraiser. Since then, it has grown into so much more! There are many things Elvehjem neighbors can purchase from "Market Day." Elvehjem is just one of a large number of schools using Market Day to raise funds. For more info, go to: www.marketday.com . Or visit the school web site at www.madison.k12.wi.us/elvehjem. By helping yourself, you help the school, too!

A huge THANK YOU to three little neighbor boys with BIG HEARTS. While out of town late October on vacation, our home was toilet papered. The boys came over, without being asked, and cleaned it all up before we returned! Thanks from some grateful neighbors!
The holiday season often compels us look back on the past twelve months. This seems particularly so as we complete this first year of the new millennium. One year ago America faced the dilemma of a presidential election where the candidate with the most votes ended up losing the election. Americans had to confront the entire issue of delegated powers, separation of powers, and presidential legitimacy in a very fundamental way. Fortunately for the country, the election did not result in anarchy. Instead, many Americans resolved to become involved in the political process. Membership in political organizations has increased significantly. This bodes well for our democracy.
The second dramatic event of the past year is the terrorist attacks of September 11. These attacks revealed the existence a network of fanatics whose mission is to wreck havoc on the United States. These attacks achieved the goal of undermining the US economy and heightening Americans' fear for their personal safety. The attacks also triggered a tremendous outpouring of our best human qualities as Americans responded with generous donations of money, blood, and volunteer time to help the victims of the attacks. We witnessed the stark aspects of both the good and the evil of which the human race is capable. I found it reassuring to witness donors cheerfully waiting for hours to donate blood, children donating their piggy-bank savings, and the outpouring of appreciation to local firefighters, police, and emergency responders. I was relieved that the president's response was measured and he recognized that an over-reliance on bombing would lead to new converts to fanaticism. The last half of the 20th century has demonstrated that violence begets violence and peace begets peace.
Lets hope we can harness the generous good will of the American people to put those lessons to work for us achieving a more just world.

"Service is the rent we pay for living. It is the very purpose of life and not something you do in your spare time or after your have reached your personal goals."
-Marian Wright EdelmanGreetings! Are you ready for Fall? How did it get to be October so fast? The change of the season is so gorgeous! It really seems so much more vibrant, or maybe I am just noticing more these days--since September 11, I seem to savor more of the world I live in. What an outrage, but what a wonderful time to be an American. Now about what's happening----
In the neighborhood:Just like you, my family was shocked and saddened by the recent attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. My thoughts and prayers are with the many people personally affected.
Now is a good time to express sincere appreciation and thanks to our firefighter, police, and sheriff protective officers. And to be grateful for our families, friends, neighbors, and community.
I look forward to hearing from you on the County Executive's 2002 County Budget, which, as of this writing, will be presented to the County Board and the public on October 1. This promises to be another difficult budget, given reduced State funding. I've fought hard to have the reconstruction of the Cottage Grove Road and East Buckeye Road bridges included in the 2002 budget. Now we need to ensure that it stays in the budget. Please continue to send me e-mails or postcards indicating your support. This reconstruction will allow for safer vehicular, bike and pedestrian safety.
Dane County Human Services Department and its' budget are overseen by the Health and Human Needs Committee, on which I serve with other Dane County Supervisors. The Department accounts for over 50% of the total County budget, with funding from Federal and State government and the local tax levy. With decreased State funding, a major effort is underway to reduce administrative costs in the agencies with which the County contracts for services. It is at times like this that I appreciate my long background in managing operating and capital budgets.
Good news for the East Side! The East Side YMCA recently celebrated completion of its' renovation and expansion work. As Vice Chair of the YMCA of Dane County, I would like to invite you to take a tour of this wonderful facility which has something for everyone in the community, regardless of ability.
Please call or e-mail me about your issues and concerns--and have a wonderful and healthy remainder of autumn. Best regards,
Carole McGuire, 222-3279, mcguire@co.dane.wi.us, 502 Glenview Drive, 53716
Here are the continuing exploits (ok, meetings and actions) of the Painted Post EcoTeam. I'm just sharing some of the useful information we've learned. The topic was energy. Fluorescent bulbs are much improved. Sure they're a bit more expensive, but they last much longer, are more energy-efficient and they no longer have a "green color." You may even have a choice of color - yellow (warm) to blue (cool). So consider installing some fluorescent bulbs to save energy.
