I would like to hear your stories about living in the
Elvehjem Neighborhood. Have you lived in the neighborhood for over 40 years?
How has it changed? Did you help start the ENA? Did you meet your best friend
or spouse while living here? What is your favorite memory of the area? I’ll
share some of the stories throughout the year in the Echo and put all of
them together for next year’s annual meeting.
Elvehjem Neighborhood Garage Sale Date Set

Don’t let the early
spring slop keep you from your gardening chores.
The late dormant season—February, March, April—is
the best time to prune most of our deciduous woody ornamentals in our gardens.
Prune with a purpose--Approach your tree with the following steps in mind
to optimize your efforts. Remember, too, you only want to remove about 25%
of the canopy in one season.
1. Remove broken, diseased, dying or dead branches. 2. Select a leader and remove competing leaders 3. Select the lowest permanent branch. 4. Select scaffold branches and cut back or remove competing branches, crossing or rubbing branches, or branches spaced too tightly at one spot. 5. Select temporary branches below the lowest permanent branch (and remove those in future years). These steps hold true for most species destined to be large shade trees in your landscape. You may find these rules do not necessarily apply to specialty trees or shrubs you may have. Use your better gardening judgment and bend the rules as necessary. Regardless, a few minutes of pruning each year will leave any plant more aesthetically appealing, healthier and a longer-lived specimen in your garden.
